Blaby & District Social Centre celebrates new roof thanks to funding

6 March 2015

Blaby & District Social Centre secured a £21,552 grant from Biffa Award; a multi-million pound fund that helps to build communities and transform lives through awarding grants to community and environmental projects across the UK, as part of the Landfill Communities Fund.

The grant, which was awarded under Biffa Award’s Community Buildings theme, funded a project to remove and replace the 50 year old asbestos roof on the main hall.  The works included the installation of a double skin roof, inclusive of white liner panels, z bars, insulation and plasticized coated steel top sheet.

Following completion, the team at the centre are now hopeful that the improved facility will welcome more community groups through activities and celebratory events.

Dr Clive Pett, Chairman, Blaby & District Social Centre, said:

“The spectre of the old asbestos roof is gone! The new roof will ensure the continuation of the social centre for another 55 years.”

Dr Beverley Barnsley, Secretary, Blaby Drama Group, said:

“After struggling with leakages from the old roof for some time, we are very proud of the new roof, which will keep us safe, secure and dry for many years to come.”

Gillian French, Biffa Award Programme Manager, said:

“This project is an excellent example of how the Landfill Communities Fund can help improve local spaces for the whole community to enjoy.”
